Cuckfield Mayoral Elections and Mayor's Procession

Welcome to Cuckfield Life’s Mayoral Election and Procession event page. Here you will find our most recent information for everything mayoral.

Held on the third Friday in October, the Mayor’s Election prides itself on being completely and openly corrupt – whichever candidate buys the most votes is declared the winner and elected as the next Mayor of The Independent State of Cuckfield. Votes cost one penny each

As is tradition, the Independent State of Cuckfield (ISOC) held the annual Mayor’s election on the third Friday of October, kindly hosted this year by The Talbot. The candidates proceeded with caution early in the evening, keeping their cards (funds) close to their chest but as the evening progressed it started to become clear that there was a clear frontrunner. However, until the polls closed at 10pm it was still open to all comers. The final results were as follows (note that every vote is one penny).

Luke Mitchell: 872,850 (winner)
Jess Revis: 34,082
Alan Carter:10,500 (retiring Mayor)
Ken Gregory: 8,626
Keegan Croydon-Elkins: 2,076

Once the votes were converted to pounds the total raised was an excellent £9,281.34, and all the funds will be distributed to local good causes. Thanks to all the candidates and congratulations to Luke Mitchell, the new Mayor of Cuckfield. And a particular thank you to Alan Carter for his dedicated year of service as Cuckfield Mayor.

The next day the new Mayor was welcomed by the villagers of Cuckfield as part of the mayor’s procession. Floats were provided by Holy Trinity PTA (1st Place), Orchard House (2nd Place), Cuckfield Scouts (3rd Place) and also Cuckfield Dramatic Society and Cuckfield Bookfest, plus music from Burgess Hill Marching Youth. The weather was kind, if a bit chilly, and the crowd enjoyed the celebrations in the High Street.

You can see all the photos from the procession on the next page. For more information, please visit www.cuckfieldstate.org

60 years of Cuckfield mayors

Founded in 1966, The Independent State of Cuckfield is celebrating 60 years of Cuckfield Mayors, elections, processions and fundraising. This year’s election takes place on Friday 16th October at The Talbot, with the Mayor’s Procession the following day. We talked to Mike Schlup, Chairman of the Independent State to find out more.

What does it take to become mayor of Cuckfield?

It’s quite straightforward. Votes are actually pennies, so whichever candidate raises the most money come election night will be elected mayor.

Do you have to raise big sums to win the election?

This varies from year to year. Some years can result in big vote counts but for most other years the election can be won with a much lower total. What is important is that whether a candidate raises £100, £1,000 or more, every penny goes into the pot for the community to support the procession floats and wider good causes in and around Cuckfield.

People often say they are too busy to run for mayor or to be mayor. What does it take?

The election is all about fun and fundraising. If a candidate has just one small fundraiser for their campaign and doesn’t win, that’s fine. It’s about having fun and contributing to the community. It’s genuinely an enjoyable thing to do to run for mayor; I’ve done it myself and we had a great time. In fact, it’s better all round to have multiple candidates raising a smaller amount of funds than just one or two trying to raise larger amounts. And if you do win then you can do as much or as little as you want as mayor, depending on your other commitments.

What happens if nobody stands for election?

Traditionally, if there is no contest, then the current mayor is automatically re-elected. But this means there will be no new funds for local groups and organisations, and eventually this could mean the end of the Independent State of Cuckfield. In October’s Cuckfield Life, we’ll meet the candidates and hear more about their campaigns.

Raise Your Voice at the Christmas tree festival

By Hazel Gaydon

Raise Your Voice is honoured to be the chosen charity for this year’s Cuckfield Christmas Tree Festival. With groups across Sussex, in Burgess Hill, Lewes and East Grinstead, we aim to bring music, creativity and shared joy to those living with dementia and their carers.

As an independent charity funded entirely by donations, supported by teams of volunteers, every penny counts towards our upbeat sessions, headed by three gifted professionals. Jane Haughton, experienced singer and workshop leader, together with Nancy Cooley and Jenny Bewick create imaginative programmes to stimulate brains, release voices and build a family of friends who love to sing together. You should hear our quirky version of The Magic Flute featuring Pam (Pamina) and Tam (Tamino) from this term’s creative project: Mozart mixing easily with Stevie Wonder and Burt Bacharach!

Participants report so many benefits: greater alertness, enhanced mood, reduced stress, heightened confidence, but above all, the joy of having fun. “Raise Your Voice is so very special; it does Mum and I the world of good. We all belong as equals and feel equally valued.”

The festival will run at Holy Trinity Church, Cuckfield from 4th – 6th December.

Do come along and enjoy the stunning display of trees; have a go at winning a top prize at our Raise Your Voice table in the Old School or some delicious refreshments in the festival café.

Firework display promises explosive night out

With a hot summer now well behind us the intense heat from the giant bonfire which signals the start of the Cuckfield fireworks display could be a welcome throwback for many. And as usual it will be a spectacular sight to see the village skies come alive with an explosive range of pyrotechnics in sync with a pulsating music track. What’s more, it’s all in the name of charity with the profits from the night being donated to a wide range of local good causes, including Holy Trinity primary school. Thanks to sustained community support from across Mid Sussex this legendary event has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds over the last 39 years. So Saturday, November 7th from 7pm, at Cuckfield Park is undoubtedly a hot date for the diary. “We always aim to provide a great family night out and thanks to our new and much improved website, tickets and convenient off-site parking is easier than ever to buy,” said Michael Moore, Chair of the Cuckfield Bonfire Society. “Huge amounts of work from our volunteer committee goes into ensuring that it’s always a night to remember and as well as providing an epic display we really focus on the parking logistics and catering to ensure everyone has a good time,” Bonfire tickets can be bought by scanning the QR code, as well as parking tickets at nearby Warden Park School.

Cuckfield Bonfire 2026

by Cuckfield Bonfire team

The bonfire is lit by the newly elected Mayor of Cuckfield – followed by a professionally run firework display, choreographed to music. There will be a host of food and drink stands raising money for the stallholders’ own good causes and, as you would expect at a family event, strictly no alcohol. A fantastic evening in prospect for all the family and, with such a rich history and worthy causes to benefit, this is surely a village tradition worth supporting.

Cuckfield Charitable Bonfire & Fireworks to Music has developed into one of the village’s major annual fundraising events. Over the years, many thousands of pounds have been raised for local groups.

Saturday 7th November, gates open at 5.30pm, bonfire lit at 6.45pm and fireworks to music at 7.30pm.

The event is open to all ages with under 5-year-olds getting in for free.

The event is being held in the beautiful grounds of Cuckfield Park. Visitors can expect the usual HUGE bonfire followed by a professionally run firework display, choreographed to music.

Car parking is purchasable on the night on the entrance gates or in advance at Warden Park School, details on our website https://www.cuckfieldbonfire.co.uk/
