Cuck-stye judgement day looming

Judgement day is looming for the proposed Cuck-stye development – merging Ansty and Cuckfield with 1,450 houses – as the plan is due to be considered by Mid Sussex District councillors.

Deputy Chief Executive of MSDC Judy Holmes has informed our two local parish councils that they are due to recommend approval of the Ansty Farms proposals, submitted by the developer Fairfax.

The final decision will be made by twelve councillors on the planning committee who have recently rejected officer’s recommendations on another local development, as they had sound grounds on which to object.

Members of the community-wide Cuck-stye campaign have been busy for some weeks compiling an evidence-based 35-page dossier, with the help of a team of consultants and legal support, demonstrating comprehensively why the evidence shows the plan is not sustainable.

They also reported back to the community in a wellattended briefing session at the Talbot pub last month, led by Cuckfield Parish Council Chair Andy Burton and Giles King, Chair of the Cuckfield Society.

This campaign report along with a 2-minute film has been sent to all officers and members of the planning committee, who will also have been provided with a range of officer’s own reports, explaining why they now back the development.

At the committee just three representatives of the campaign will have very limited time slots to make the case against the development. Cuckfield District Councillor Jim Knight, who is not on the committee will also have an opportunity, unconstrained by time limits, to make the case against Cuck-stye.

“We have left no stone unturned in the drive to ensure that we have provided a very professional, evidencebased case to MSDC, thanks to input from a range of consultants and advice from our KC,” said Simon Stokes, Chair of Ansty and Staplefield Parish Council. “I am confident that the councillors will make a balanced judgement in our favour, but there’s little doubt the case will then go to appeal,” he added.

Appeal for marshals to help with the charity big bang

To create an explosive charity night out in Cuckfield a lot of help is needed.
As the big day is fast approaching – the village’s epic Bonfire & Fireworks to Music – a call has gone out for more volunteer marshals to join the team running this giant community event, which for decades has raised very large sums for local good causes.
It involves just a few hours work on Saturday 1st November and the chance to wear an illuminating Hi Vis and be part of the Cuckfield Bonfire Society team who ensure the event runs smoothly.
“We have a great reputation and families come from across Mid Sussex, but this year securing enough marshals is a particular challenge so we really would welcome the support from anyone who can spare a few hours,” said Michael Moore, Chair of the Cuckfield Bonfire Society.
“We have a great night lined up with a dramatic new display set to a memorable music track and if all goes well are set to make substantial donations to several local good causes, like Woodlands Mead and Holy Trinity Schools, along with the Dame Vera Lynn Charity.
“We are delighted to be able to continue to support people across the community despite the fact that our event costs are constantly going up and our instinct is not to increase ticket prices,” he added.
Anyone who can help out Is urged to contact organisers as soon as possible via the website www.cuckfieldbonfire.co.uk or the society’s Facebook page.

Tickets which are £28 for a family, £10 for adults and £5 for children, are already on sale via www.trybooking.co.uk Parking can be booked in advance at Warden Park School.

The spectacular event at Cuckfield Park starts from 5.30pm, with ceremonial bonfire lighting at 6.45pm. There are a range of food outlets on offer to cater for most tastes, including stands run by Holy Trinity School PTA and the Scouts.

Remember, remember the 1st of November

One of Cuckfield’s greatest charity events is making a sparkling return in the autumn – in one of its earliest ever appearances. Months of painstaking planning and fiery preparations have gone into making it an explosive family night out to remember.

It’s the annual Cuckfield Bonfire and Fireworks to Music - which over many decades has raised huge amounts of funds for local good causes – and is this year being held earlier than usual, on Saturday 1st November.
“We have been working for months to make sure it is a night out to remember and it is definitely one of the earliest dates we’ve held it,” said Michael Moore, Chairman of the Cuckfield Bonfire Society.
“Last year we were able to make substantial donations to six local good causes, including Woodlands Mead and Holy Trinity Schools, along with the Dame Vera Lynn Charity. “We are delighted to be able to continue to support people across the community despite the fact that our event costs are constantly going up and our instinct is not to increase ticket prices,” he added.

CBS are always on the lookout for event marshals and anyone who can help out is urged to contact organisers via the website www.cuckfieldbonfire.co.uk or via the Facebook page.

Tickets are £28 for a family, £10 for adults and £5 for children, which are already on sale via www.trybooking.co.uk – where parking can be booked in advance at Warden Park School.

The spectacular event at Cuckfield Park starts from 5.30pm, with ceremonial bonfire lighting at 6.45pm. There are a range of food outlets on offer to cater for most tastes, including stands run by Holy Trinity School PTA and the Scouts, plus there’s one new secret ingredient in the display.

“This year we have been working with our fireworks team on coming up with a memorable last few minutes… So, we are planning a truly grand finale,” said Michael.

Final push for mayor’s election

Campaigning for this year’s mayor’s election is now in full swing with candidates pushing hard for those final votes. The election takes place at the Rose & Crown this year on Friday 17th October from 7.30pm so make sure you’re there to cast the final votes to find out who will be awarded the crown of new mayor of Cuckfield. Front runners are Woody (local Labrador), Alan Carter (local driving instructor), Lucy Martin (local WGSC manager), Jack Ford (local Talbot manager) and Gareth Knapman (local sparky and Wheatsheaf regular).

Mike Schlup, Chairman of the Indpendent State of Cuckfield commented: “Despite what you may be hearing on the streets of Cuckfield, the election result is never in the bag until the polls close at 10pm on election night. Candidates collect votes by raising money (1 penny = 1 vote) and it is well known that secret donors will top up a candidate’s total at the very last minute before the polls close. So, it keeps us all guessing right up to the last minute.”

The Saturday after the election (18th October) sees the new Mayor presented to Cuckfield as part of the mayor’s procession. This sets off from Warden Park Academy at 2.30pm, heading up to Ardingly Road and then back down to the High Street at 3.30pm. The High Street will remain closed until 5pm for the celebrations which include a marching band, entertainment for the kids and, later in the evening, live music in the Talbot. All funds raised in the mayor’s election are distributed to the groups taking part in the procession and other good causes in and around Cuckfield.

Mayoral Elections and Procession 2025

The Independent State of Cuckfield Mayor’s election takes place this year on Friday 17th October at the Rose & Crown. Candidates collect ‘votes’ in the form of pennies and the winner is the one with the most pennies on election night. Not only is this beautifully simple. but all the money raised goes straight back to local groups and charities.

Candidates this year are Alan Carter standing for the Rose & Crown, Lucy Martin for HHRFC, Gareth Knapman for the Wheatsheaf, Jack Ford for the Talbot, and of course Woody for The Cuckfield Show (TBC for the White Harte). Polls open at 7pm and votes can be cast in cash or by card to help your candidate cross the line first. Or you can donate directly to your favourite before election night. It’s always a fun and raucous evening so come along and be there to welcome the new Mayor.

The following day sees the mayor process through Cuckfield from Warden Park to the High Street as they greet their new subjects. All the floats that take part in the procession receive a share of the mayor’s fund. The new Mayor will also have the honour of representing the Independent State on its 60th anniversary.
