An Easter message from Holy Trinity Church, Cuckfield

By Rev Daniel Valentine

As Easter approaches, the shops and media channels are filled with imagery of eggs, bunnies, and chicks, signaling a season that seems to demand lavish expenditure on chocolate and Easter eggs. All this stands in stark contrast to the true essence of Easter for Christians. The real significance of Easter, rich in emotion and spirituality, spans from Palm Sunday through Holy Week, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and culminates in the celebration of Easter Sunday. I invite you to join us at Holy Trinity to walk with us on a profound journey from suffering to hope… Our observances start with the Maundy Thursday Eucharist at 8pm on 28th March, marking the beginning of the Triduum, the sacred three-day period before Easter. This service invites us to reflect on Christ’s sacrifice and our faithfulness, followed by a vigil extending into the night. Good Friday, observed on 29th March, is a day for deep reflection. At noon, we’ll meditate on Jesus’ final words from the cross, contemplating His sacrifice, with preacher Kevin Carey guiding us. This reflection will be accompanied by Fearghus Beauchamp’s rendition of Haydn’s Seven Last Words piano sonatas. Simultaneously, families can look forward to Easterthemed craft activities at the Old School, providing an opportunity for everyone to get involved in the Easter story. At 2pm, the Good Friday Liturgy in the church narrates Christ’s Passion, from the Last Supper to His crucifixion, highlighting Jesus’ immense love and sacrifice for the sins of the world. Alternatively, ‘Family Praise’ at the Old School provides a worship experience for all ages, followed by refreshments and hot cross buns. Holy Saturday’s vigil on 30th March at 8pm is a shortened version of the traditional overnight gathering, recounting God’s salvation history up to Jesus’ resurrection, a celebration of new life and hope. Much of the service focuses on the ‘light of Christ’ bringing illumination and grace to the world. Easter Sunday starts at 8am with Holy Communion, followed by the 9.45am Parish Eucharist. This service joyfully proclaims the Easter Gospel and celebrates the First Eucharist of Easter. We sing ‘Halleluiah’ depicting our shared joy in Christ’s resurrection through song, and enjoy fellowship over cake and a glass of fizz. At the heart of the Easter narrative lies a powerful tale of sacrifice, love, and rebirth, as it chronicles Jesus’ passage from death back to life. This story, steeped in profound themes, not only brings about a sense of renewal and forgiveness but also prompts us to deeply reflect on the nature of divine love. The season calls upon us to embrace its spirit fully, urging us to offer hope and support to those in need. You’re warmly invited to join us in embracing the transformative spirit of Easter. As we approach this sacred season, let it inspire us to share the boundless love of Christ with others. I encourage you this Easter to dedicate this time to reflection, celebration, and recommitting ourselves to acts of kindness and love. Do join us in making this season truly meaningful. Wishing you a blessed Easter…

A new year word from Cuckfield's Holy Trinity Church

Dear friends...

As I write these words, we find ourselves only two days into the year 2024, so allow me to extend my warmest wishes for a happy New Year! This month, I would like to reflect on ‘reflection’. Genuine reflection requires time and mental space. Given the whirlwind of activity and celebration that engulfs us from the middle of November through the early days of January, I wonder how many of us can truly carve out the time and mental clarity needed for some well needed ‘me’ time let alone some time to contemplate God. Speaking from personal experience, I confess that I have struggled to do so as much as I should for the sake of my own well-being. I find solace in the prospect of returning to a more ‘normal’ rhythm of life as we settle into the month of January, and me into a new pattern of ministry in my new home.

But why is reflection so crucial? It serves to make sense of the events that unfold in our lives. Without taking time to reflect, we may drift through life without a clear understanding of our place on the journey or the broader perspective on our experiences. We may become reactive, responding to whatever is immediately in front of us, one thing after another. We might become overly reliant on our devices to dictate our priorities in any given moment, convinced that something pressing always requires our attention.

Yet, God has greater aspirations for us. God encourages us to act from the depths of our hearts rather than reacting merely from our minds. Jesus instructs us to seek God first, assuring us that everything else will naturally fall into place. The world will always demand our attention, offering a constant stream of distractions. However, God is always present, eager for us to participate in the divine work within the world.

The choice is ours: what will we prioritise? As we have recently celebrated the birth of Jesus, let us take a moment to sit quietly and contemplate how this precious gift might transform not only our lives but also the entire world... With New Year blessings Daniel

News from Holy Trinity Church Cuckfield

Welcome to our new vicar

The waiting is over and the excitement is growing. Although there is still over a month to go before his induction towards the end of November, everyone at Holy Trinity is eagerly awaiting the arrival of our new vicar, Daniel Valentine.

We have been extremely fortunate to have been looked after during the eighteen-month vacancy by three wonderful priests, Stephen Caple, David Tickner and Stephen Terry to whom we are very grateful indeed. However, it is not the same as having our own vicar!

We know that having a vicar in post is important not just for the church but also for the whole community. However, come the new year we may well be wondering what the fuss was all about. The calendar will have rolled on just the same. We will have had the mayor’s election, Bonfire Night, Remembrance Sunday, Advent, Christmas Tree Festival and Christmas itself.

Daniel will be collated to the Benefice of Cuckfield and Bolney by the Lord Bishop of Chichester, The Rt Revd Martin Warner, and inducted by the Archdeacon of Horsham, the Venerable Angela Martin, on Wednesday 22nd November at 7.30pm at Holy Trinity Cuckfield. Do join us if you can, to welcome our new vicar.
