Cuckfield Dramatic Society presents Blithe Spirit

Cuckfield Dramatic Society is excited to finally announce that the long awaited and anticipated Noel Coward play Blithe Spirit is coming to the Queen’s Hall later this month and we hope that you will be able to attend.

The production was originally scheduled for October last year but due to unforeseen events and illness the heartbreaking decision to cancel the show was made.

Lines had been rehearsed, characters developed, music, sound effects and lighting developed and a fabulous set painstakingly built – we had even bought the ice creams!

It is ironic that this play remained unseen, as ‘The Unseen’ is the title of the novel that Charles Condomine, husband of Ruth and deceased wife Elvira, is having trouble writing. He invites Madam Arcarti over for an evening séance in order to gain some inspiration but gains far more that he had anticipated. As the haunting sound of Irving Berlin’s ‘always’ plays on the gramophone, Madam Arcarti slips into a trance and summons the ghost of Elvira. Only Charles can see or hear her. The flirty Elvira makes attempts to disrupt the relationship between Charles and his current wife Ruth, who is driven to her wits end.

This cleverly written witty play is a ‘must see’. Transport yourself into another realm as only theatre can at The Queen’s Hall.

As Coward once wrote; “The theatre is a wonderful place, a house of strange enchantment, a temple of illusion.”

Blithe Spirit is on at The Queen’s Hall between 22nd and 25th May. www.ticketsource.co.uk/cds

Mid Sussex District Council May newsletter 2024

PLANNING IS APPROVED FOR BURGESS HILL CENTRE FOR OUTDOOR SPORT

The planning application for the new state-of-the-art Centre for Outdoor Sport in Burgess Hill has been given the green light, marking a significant milestone in the town’s sporting landscape, with works set to start this spring. Situated on an 8.6-hectare block of land within the Brookleigh development, the Centre for Outdoor Sport (CfOS) will provide first-class facilities for the district and would not have been possible without the support from Homes England. The sports mix, refined over three years through extensive engagement, consultation and data analysis, will complement the district’s existing sports infrastructure, offering a variety of sports. The development of the CfOS is one piece of the jigsaw of sports provision across the district.

20mph zones in Cuckfield survey

Back in the summer last year, the Parish Council ran a survey to ask for feedback regarding traffic calming measures within Cuckfield with a particular focus on 20mph zones as these are actively encouraged by West Sussex County Council’s Speed Limit Policy which was updated in 2022.

Due to the amazing response that showed considerable support for the idea, the Parish Council has reviewed the suggestions and created a new survey to establish whether there would be support for specific 20mph roads within the centre of Cuckfield, specifically London Lane, part of Broad Street, the High Street and South Street.

We would love to hear your thoughts on this. Please could you complete the new survey if you have not already done so: https://forms.office.com/e/hAfhcgQgDZ
The more responses we receive, the better the evidence base will be for presenting to WSCC – whether this is in favour of or against the proposal. This is your opportunity to have a voice regarding the traffic issues within the village.
