Mystery photos exhibited at Cuckfield Museum

Cuckfield Museum reopens on 16th February with a new display – ‘The Light of Day: treasures old and new from our storeroom’.

The Museum has been closed since mid December for annual cleaning.

Among the exhibits will be these intriguing photos (right) which have recently been given to the museum.

The curators are in the process of trying to unravel the stories behind the photographs and are asking villagers for their help.

“We wondered whether any of your readers might be able to shed light on them?” said curator Phillipa Malins.

“They were given to the present owners of the house in Church St which used to be Askews cabinet makers and later undertakers, and were taken coming out of Cuckfield Church and in the garden of the house.”

She added that the photographs were given to the present owners by the previous owners and a costume expert has identified them as being around 1905, when the Askews would have been well established on the premises.

“The business continued on until the 1950s. People remember the family but so far no one can identify the bride or groom,” she said. “The photos are unusual for the time in that they are so informal. The clothes denote a very prosperous background for the couple – more than one would expect for the family of a cabinet maker.”

Philippa and her team will be carrrying out some research into Church records for summer weddings around 1905 to see if that reveals anything but would welcome any input from residents.

Jack's Chocolate Cheesecake recipe

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching we asked trainee chef Jack Armstrong for a foolproof celebration three course menu. The recipes for Oysters and Rib Eye Steak with creamed leaks and triple cook chips are printed in the Jan/Feb issue (3), which just leaves pudding....

Chocolate cheesecake
125g melted butter
250g Bourbon biscuits

200g full fat cream cheese
400g mascarpone cheese
75g golden caster sugar
3 eggs
40g cocoa powder
100g 75%  melted chocolate

Grease a 20cm cake tin. To make the base, crush the Bourbon biscuits in a bowl, pour over the melted butter, mix well and press into the base of the cake tin. Leave in the fridge for at least half an hour.

To make the filling put both cheeses and the sugar in a food processer and blend. Then add the eggs one by one, followed by the cocoa powder and finally the melted chocolate, keep mixing into fully combined.

Remove the base from the fridge and spoon over the filling keeping it level. Bake in a pre heated oven at 170°c for 50 minutes or until the cake only has a slight wobble in the middle. Turn off the oven and allow the cheesecake to cool for an hour inside with the door shut. Remove and place in the fridge for at least 3 hours. Once cooled remove from the cake tin and dust with a little cocoa powder.

Firstly, congratulations on becoming the first Police and Crime Commissioner for Sussex! It’s good to know that Mid Sussex, and in particular the villages of Cuckfield and Ansty, will be well represented!

Can you tell us a little about your role as a Mid Sussex District Councillor and how this has helped prepare you for your new challenge?
As a Councillor talking to local people and listening to their views is vital, and this experience is something I can bring to the role of Police & Crime Commissioner (PCC).

Will you now be standing down to concentrate on your new role?
I will stand down early next year and an election to appoint a replacement will be held in May alongside the county election. I am not claiming expenses as a Mid Sussex District Councillor.
